Monaco Grand Prix Opening Lap Crash Brings Out Red Flags

Monaco Grand Prix: Opening lap crash brings out red flags

Schumacher blames wet patch for 'super weird' Monaco crash

Leclerc wins Monaco GP to end winless streak

The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix was stopped on the opening lap after a three-car crash involving Sergio Perez, Mick Schumacher, and Kevin Magnussen. The race was red-flagged while the cars were cleared from the track.

Schumacher, who was making his Formula 1 debut, said that he lost control of his car after hitting a wet patch on the track. He crashed into the barriers at the exit of the Swimming Pool section of the circuit.

"It was a super weird crash," Schumacher said. "I went slightly offline and onto the wet part of the track, and then I just lost the rear end of the car. It was really strange."

The race was eventually restarted behind the safety car, with Charles Leclerc taking the lead from pole position. Leclerc held on to win the race, ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. It was Leclerc's first win of the season, and it ended his run of four consecutive second-place finishes.
